Our featured speaker will be Stanley Elliott, Commander of the American Legion Department of Iowa. Stan was born and raised in Ames and graduated from Ames High in 1975. He began his military career with the U.S. Navy, training as an aviation machinist mate. Stan’s first assignment then was to Fighter Squadron 24 at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego. At sea his unit served on the aircraft carrier Constellation, where Stan worked the flight deck as final checker and trouble shooter for the squadron. During his service, he made two deployments in the western Pacific, visiting Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Hawaii. He completed his four-year Navy service with the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class.

The program at the cemetery begins at 11:00 a.m. with Ames Mayor Pro Tem Amber Corrieri offering a welcome from the City and American Legion Post 37 Commander Jay Sisco greeting the audience on behalf of the Legion. The program will be introduced by Tim Gartin, President of the Ames Patriotic Council. A color guard from the Des Moines Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol will present the colors. The Ames Municipal Band under the direction of Mike Golemo will play and Jim DeHoet will sing. A list of the local veterans interred since last Memorial Day will be read, followed by a salute from the American Legion Honor Guard.

In case of rain, the parade will be cancelled, and the program will move indoors to the Ames Municipal Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. For those not able to attend in person, the program will also viewable online at www.facebook.com/AmesPatrioticCouncil/events and www.AmesPatrioticCouncil.org.
